Whether digital or analog, atomic or pendulum powered, Wall Clocks do more than just tell the time: they fill your rooms with a wonderful clockiness.

Wall clocks are classified as any type of timepiece that hangs or mounts on a wall. So why are we wild about ‘em?

People choose wall clocks for their convenience of visibility.

By placing a clock on the wall at a major focal point, a person may simply look up and see the time. Numbers or numerals are printed largely to optimize visibility, but hour hands that are off balance commonly cause confusion with distinguishing the correct time in analog designs. Digital wall clocks are easier to read than analog wall clocks; the time is displayed in an informative manner using large digits. Some digital clocks have back-lights, making their visibility even more clear. Wall clocks also are commonly used for decorative purposes, as well as for telling time, making them useful and attractive.

The world’s first wall clock was invented by Peter Heinlein in Germany during the year 1510. This timepiece was spring-driven, but because the springs would unwind at uneven intervals, the clocks were not reliable for telling time. Sometimes over an hour per day was lost or gained, according to the new wall clocks. Clocks that preceded the first wall clock were very large and were powered by heavy weights.

Not only did Peter Henlein invent the first Wall Clock...it's said that he also really knew how to party.

Later in 1656, the pendulum clock was invented by Christiaan Huygens. Because a pendulum mechanism requires stability to operate correctly, these new clocks made excellent wall clocks. Until the 1930s, pendulum-driven wall clocks were the most common type sold. Quartz clocks were invented in 1927, becoming popular and replacing many pendulum-driven wall units from the 1930s to 1940s. Quartz clocks are the most common type of wall clock sold today; the simple round pieces that average about $8-$10 are the #1 type of wall timepiece sold. Of course there are many other types of wall clocks today; throughout history there have been a variety also.

One of the most famous types of wall clocks in history are cuckoo clocks. These timepieces were first marketed in the Black Forest area in Germany during the decade between 1740-1750. Both the French and Swiss adopted this design of clock and began crafting and selling them. Many cuckoo clocks hung on the wall and were powered by a pendulum and chains with weights. People still buy new and antique cuckoo clocks today; these models have remained a popular novelty for centuries.

Now that's a pretty wacky example of a pendulum wall clock!

Pendulum wall clocks with varying designs were also popular at this time. Many pendulum-driven wall clocks had a small skeleton key that was used to wind them frequently. When the clock ran out of power, the pendulum would stop. Most wall clocks were crafted of a solid wood, a face and a glass case. The clock would be in a geometrical shape, with the pendulum hanging below the clock’s face. There was a small door that would open up to the pendulum’s compartment, giving easy access for restarting it and winding the device.

Another popular style of wall clock from the 1800s to early 1900s was

What's that you say, THAT's not a wall clock? Well then, Junior, you're too smart for us...but it IS a rockin' example of a Ormulu Decorative Clock.

s. This material is now a valuable thing among antique collectors, highly increasing a clock’s value. Designs made with the Ormulu substance usually included a small clock face surrounded by elaborate Ormulu sculpted into intricate designs.

The popularity of pendulum clocks saw a steady decline as quartz-powered wall clocks took over in the early 1930s. In 1932, the first electric wall clock was released by Westclox, an American watch and clock-making company. During this time period, the electric wall clock was a popular commodity. Once quartz clocks took over, the creativity in designing different styles of clocks and casings emerged, with creativity piquing in the 1950s.

Ahoi, Matey! We wish we had one of these old Westclox Electric Wall Clocks...

Wall clocks today are available in a wide variety of products. Clocks that are shaped like sports objects and feature a favorite team’s logo are popular among fans; clocks with religious verses are popular in churches or with those who share the same faith. Some clocks are designed to match a specific style of decoration. Someone who chose to decorate a space with modern art, warped shapes and bright colors may choose a clock with an odd shape and attractive color to match their decor. Not all wall clocks are moderately-sized; some are designed to consume a large amount of wall space. Wall clocks with no numerals or numbers, but simply spokes with hour and minute hands are a popular style of large wall clock today. Wall clocks used in libraries, schools, businesses and offices are usually a large round white and black clock with large numbers; each minute is marked and hour, minute and second hands are included.

Clocks crafted by American clock maker Simon Willard are the most highly-sought timepieces among antique clock collectors. Another coveted manufacturer of antique wall clocks is Seth Thomas, also an American timepiece craftsman. American clock designer George Nelson crafted many abstract clock designs, but not the clocks themselves; he was an artistic architect well-known for his attractive but practical designs. From the 1950s through the 1980s, his artistic clocks were popular, continuing to hold their values today of well over $200 each for a well-kept piece.

Among modern wall clocks, average sales records indicate that novelty styles and practical simple wall clocks are the types that sell the most, with practical simple clocks taking the lead. Seiko, Ingraham, Timex and Westclox are popular manufacturers of simple, practical and affordable designs sold for less than $25. These companies also sell novelty and themed clocks for reasonable prices, usually less than $100. One famous high-end clock manufacturer is River City, famous for their rare imports. Known for their radio-controlled and cuckoo replica wall clocks, this American company sells quality wall clocks, but the prices are usually between $250 and $500 for each piece. The Howard Miller Clock Company of Michigan is also known for its luxury high-quality wall clocks, which normally sell for over $300 each.

In recent years, another type of wall clock has gained popularity – atomic clocks. Due to their impeccable radio-controlled precision and scientific method of self-timekeeping, atomic clocks are popular gifts and novelties. Currently the atomic clock is the most accurate and precise timekeeping device known to man. Since these clocks are still somewhat expensive, they are not something to be found in every household, but they continue to gain popularity.

Wall clocks are still common today in nearly every place: classrooms, businesses, train stations, airports, homes, businesses, offices and medical facilities all use these time-telling devices. Whether decorative, practical or both, wall clocks are found nearly everywhere today, and in many different styles and varieties.

With so many different kinds to choose from, is it any wonder that we’re Wild about Wall Clocks?!

Sexagesimal is a base 60 number system & is a time format used by Binary Clocks. Geek out with us as we explore binary & sexagesimal time systems!

And no, it’s not what you’re thinking (…yes, you, the big guy in the back with the smug grin on his face).

This is a family blog here. Sexagesimal is something entirely geeky, and different:

Sexagesimal (base 60) is a numeral system with sixty as the base. It originated with the ancient Sumerians in the 3rd millennium BC, was transmitted to the Babylonians, and is still used—in modified form—for measuring time, angles, and geographic coordinates. – Wikipedia.org

To explain further, we need to start from the beginning…in a galaxy far, far away…

Not all clocks display time with Roman numerals or numbers; this blog post is dedicated to one special line of time-telling devices: binary timepieces. Binary timepieces today are found in the form of wristwatches and clocks. These clocks are distinguished from regular clocks in the respect that they usually display dots instead of numbers. On an analog clock, the dots may appear as a painted pattern, correlating with each spot where a number would be on the face. Digital binary clocks are more popular, commonly made internally similar to a regular quartz-powered clock, but the time display face is a board with LED lights. Time increments are converted to correspond with specific lighting patterns . Current time is determined by adding the number of dots lit; the number each represents is determined by their position in a column.

Many binary clocks and watches show the time using a sexagesimal system with a binary format. The majority of binary clocks today are digital, but analog models do exist, being a popular novelty timepiece sought by clock enthusiasts. In order to understand exactly how these timepieces function, it is important to understand the meaning of both “sexagesimal” and “binary.”

Today's Blog Post is brought to you by...the number 60 !

“Sexagesimal” is a term which originated from the Sumarians in the 3rd millenium BC, referring to a system of numerals using the number 60 as its base. This numeral system was passed to the Babylonians, who continued to use it. Still used today for measuring time, the sexagesimal system has been slightly modified from what it originally was. The reason 60 was chosen as the base number is due to the fact that it has 12 factors, making it very easily divisible by many numbers, including every number from 1 through 6. The number 60 is also the smallest possible number that is able to be divided by every number from 1 to 6, making it the optimal choice.

“Binary“, also called the Base-2 Number System, is a numeral system where “0″ and “1″ are used to represent the value of numbers. The best way to identify a binary number is to consider its related decimal number. For example, 0 in decimal = 0 in binary; respectively 1=1, 2=10, 3=11, 4=100 and 5=101; the pattern then continues. Since telling time in columns with these correlating numbers would be difficult when using traditional decimal-style numbers for expression, four digits are used to indicate each number. For example, 0000 is equal to 0, 0010 is equal to 2, 0011 is equal to 3, 0100 is equal to 4 and 0101 is equal to 5. Computers’ internal systems actually run on a binary scale also. LED displays on binary clocks display lights to represent any 1-based digit and no lights for the 0-based digits. Scientists, horologists and computer science specialists all benefit from understanding both the binary and sexagesimal time systems in their professions.

The traditional analog and digital binary timepieces, using a combination of both the sexagesimal and binary numbering system, have recently seen competition from true binary clocks and watches. True binary format simply uses the binary system with correlating numbers for the dots without any sexagesimal column. Beginner binary timepiece users will benefit from purchasing this type of timepiece before moving on to the more complex sexagesimal and binary combined time-telling method.

At first glance, a person might wonder why someone would choose such a device that looks complicated.

Binary clocks are quite interesting to read once the method is learned – studying and learning the method is the time-consuming part. Reading time in a binary format is also useful in its stimulatory effect on the left hemisphere of the brain. Clock enthusiasts who are familiar with the construction of both binary and regular digital or analog clocks can actually convert some types of regular clocks to a binary clock. Types I, II and III digital clocks can be converted by way of a 7-segment code in BCD format. Several horology forums have instructions for creating an analog binary clock also.

Binary timepieces are however not widely popular or sought-out. The reason for this is mostly in part because the majority of the population are not familiar with binary or sexagesimal time-telling systems. Lack of popularity is certainly not due to lack of curiosity; in his blog, Jason Bradbury explains that every time he wears his binary wristwatch on “The Gadget Show,” he is showered with a flood of emails from curious consumers. In a world where the main focus is efficiency and quickness, traditional analog and digital clocks are chosen over their binary counterparts.

Anelace, Inc. is one of the most popular companies selling binary clocks. Based in California, this company offers the “Powers of 2 ” binary clock in 120V or 230V options. The faces on these digital clocks give a brightly-lit LED time display. These models use a combination of both sexagesimal and binary formats to indicate time, powered by quartz at a rate of 1 Hz. One form of popular desktop/alarm binary clock is the Epoch clock. This device displays time differently than the traditional true binary or sexagesimal time formats. Standard, Octal, Binary, Hexadecimal and Roman formats are all available options; the clock will use them interchangeably, dependent upon the preference of the user. A Unix Epoch time display is also used, which can be turned on or off easily. The Epoch clock is manufactured by ThinkGeek.

Anton Kraft had an idea in 1988 to create a watch like no other in the world, beginning the birth of the initial idea for the famous 01 The One binary wristwatches available today. Because the proper technical supplies and knowledge were not yet developed enough in 1988 to create the watches that Kraft’s idea portrayed, he had to wait until 2004 to release his line of binary watches. These well-made wrist timepieces have a bright LED display, offered in various fashions and colors to suit the styles of everyone, from chic to geek. Since 2005, a technologically-advanced Hong Kong company called Time Technology, Ltd. has acquired and distributed this brand of binary watches. Although more expensive than most cheap results found online, the price is well worth every cent to anyone seeking a stylish high-quality piece.

Another form of portable binary clock has recently become available – the Ovo keychain binary clock.

The Ovo Binary Clock Keychain: kind of cool, but it doesn't exactly rock our world, either.

Designed by German specialists, this clock is the first binary keychain timepiece. The display on the watch is fairly simple to read for anyone; not only those who have mastered the binary system need purchase this. There are two rows of dots with corresponding numbers, with the top row indicating the hour and lower row indicating minutes. To determine the time, the numbers on the top row may be added for the hour reading and the bottom row is added for the minute reading.

But hey, here at OnlineClock.net we also have a couple of binary alarm clocks that you can use online.

On the one hand we have our main Binary Clock, and on the other hand we have a variation using colored blocks that we’ve called our Space Clock…simply because it looks like the kind of clock that Alien Greys or little green men from Mars would be likely to use. So if you’d like to try using a binary clock first-hand, be sure and check them out! (As with all of our online alarm clocks and time tools, they’re free to use and require no user registration and nothing to download.)

Binary timepieces may not seem practical to some, but to those who are interested in clocks and enjoy a new conquerable challenge, learning to tell time on binary timepieces is an exciting accomplishment.

So if you think you’re the geeky type who likes new kinds of technology, consider getting a binary clock or wristwatch.

Only then can you truly look at your clock and say, “Hey, It’s Sexagesimal Time!” and party like it’s 1999.

Have you ever heard of the ISO Standard for underwater wrist watches? Do you know the difference between water-resistant & water proof wristwatches?

One of the most revolutionary inventions in the history of wristwatches is that of the underwater wrist watch. Underwater wristwatches are used by swimmers, divers, submariners and those who spend numerous amounts of time at sea where their watch will be in constant contact with moisture; Navy sailors, fishermen, yachters and Coast Guardsmen are all examples of individuals who would use one of these slightly unusual timepieces.

One of the most important things to understand about underwater wrist watches is that there are two kinds: diving watches, which are often referred to as “waterproof” and water-resistant. Water-resistant watches are often mistakenly called waterproof, but there is actually an incredible difference between the two.

Water-resistant wristwatches are the most commonly found and purchased type of underwater wrist watches.

What sets a water-resistant watch apart from a waterproof piece is the depth in metric units which it will sustain its resistance to water pressure affecting it and the ISO test standards. Water-resistant watches are made with a gasket seal that will hold under the static pressure found in certain ranges of water depths – some seals are able to withstand a much stronger pressure than others. For example an underwater watch designed for depths between 30 and 50 meters is suitable for wearing while washing hands, swimming above water and showering. Water-resistant watches designed for depths of 100 meters are used for underwater swimming, snorkeling, surfing, sailing and light water sports. Extreme water sports or activities performed by marine professionals require the strongest water-resistant watch, which has a range of 200 meters. Another defining factor distinguishing water-resistant watches is the ISO standard test. Any watch that is only suitable for the ISO 2281 water-resistance mark is named a “water-resistant” watch and will be useless to scuba divers or those who travel under very deep waters.

Unlike water-resistant watches, waterproof timepieces are built to be much more durable.

The gaskets in waterproof or diving wristwatches must withstand incredible pressure for such a small object. Generally in the world of horology, most will say that a waterproof watch is one that withstands water pressure depths of more than 100 meters. While this is partially true, it is important to consider the ISO stamp as well. Any watch that will be eligible to be considered waterproof must hold the ISO 6425 stamp. This stamp verifies that the watch will withstand much stronger static pressure. In fact, while the ISO 2281 test is based on 100% of the rated water pressure, the ISO 6425 is measured by considering 125% of the rated water pressure, meaning that readings have a further allowance in metric depth. This test also has 8 additional strict requirements for watches to receive its stamp. Watches rating 100 meters with the ISO 6425 stamp are considered dive watches, meaning they are suitable for deep-sea diving. Wrist watches designed for 200 to 300 meters are used by divers who do not dive far enough to require helium; those who do require helium will need a watch designed for 300 or more meters.

In order for a wrist watch to literally be completely waterproof, it would need to withstand static pressure at all depths. Thus far, one such watch has been labeled as a true 100% waterproof wristwatch – the Sinn UX EZM 2B. Certified for 12,000 meters, this watch’s capabilities exceed the deepest ocean depth observed by men, which is an area called Challenger Deep and is measured at a depth of 11,000 meters. Diving watches for extremely deep water where divers must spend alternating amounts of time in the water and a pressurized gas chamber are specially marked “Diver’s Watch LM For Mixed-Gas Diving.” In addition to the 8 requirements outlined in ISO 6425 test, diving watches for mixed-gas diving must meet three additional requirements; one being that the watch must be marked and the other requirements are related to added pressure capacity and endurance.

By now, many readers may be wondering where the idea for an underwater wrist watch came from. Well known for his sophisticated styles, the famous French watch maker Louis Cartier created the first underwater watch. In 1933 the Pasha of Marrakesh had requested that Cartier design a watch for him to use in his swimming pool – Cartier obliged, naming the watch design “Pasha Chronograph” and selling several similar models later.

Cartier's Pasha Chronograph

The Radiomir, one of the most famous water-resistant watches in its time, was made by Italian watchmaker in 1938. Originally created for the Royal Italian Navy men, this watch design set both the model example and new trend for water-resistant watches.

The stylish Radiomir Wristwatch by Giovanni Panerai

Be careful when buying an older underwater wrist watch: until recent years many underwater wrist watches were erroneously labeled as “waterproof” even though they were only slightly water-resistant!

Because most people are unaware of what each metric measurement or ISO stamp on a watch indicates, many watch box inserts will now specify what activities are acceptable with that wristwatch.

There are plenty of places to purchase water-resistant wristwatches in stores and through the internet today.

Simple watches suitable for hand-washing and showering are found everywhere.

Seiko makes quite a few good lower scale water-resistant watches. Casio and Timex also sell several 200-meter water-resistant watches for those who need a watch for swimming or water sports.

Dive watches require more thought and research before a purchase.

Divers must invest in a wristwatch that will be large enough to fit over a wet-suit, preferably have an illuminated dial, include non-corrosive materials and divers must never unscrew the back of the watch compartment; doing so would pose the risk of ruining the clock.

Panerai and Rolex make excellent diving watches. Anyone who chooses to purchase a water-resistant watch should be certain the watch meets the requirements of what exactly it will be used for before purchasing it in order to get the best out of their underwater wristwatch.

So, without further ado…OnlineClock.net is gone fishin’…underwater, of course, with one of our beloved underwater wristwatches!

Since most of us own clocks & watches on the lower end of the price scale, Online Clock thought it'd be interesting to take a look at very expensive clocks.

If you’re like us, you’re satisfied with a simple digital wristwatch that buy once every couple of years from one of the big discount chains.

But there are also a lot of people who place a high priority on having an expensive clock or watch, partly due to its significance as status symbol, and partly due to the fact that an expensive watch is really considered a piece of jewelry, and many people apparently just like to own stuff like this.

Average people asked to consider the most expensive timepiece they know of will usually reply “Rolex“, referring to the very popular Swiss luxury watch company.

Rolex watches are crafted carefully and made with only the highest quality materials. What determines how much one of these eye-catching accessories will cost is dependent on how complex the features of the watch are and the materials used. Another factor determining the price is how many of a specific version are released. Some pieces are unique and consequently are priced extremely high.

The most inexpensive new Rolex wristwatch averages around $2,000.00 for the very basic design. Very exquisite watches are priced upwards of $10,000.00, with some priced more than $25,000.00 if luxury materials are used. Rolex watches exceeding $25,000.00 often include precious materials such as high quality gold, diamonds or platinum.

Customized Rolex watches are often made to fit the individual tastes of wealthy customers. Perhaps a customer would like a platinum Rolex with a gold lining, a solid gold faceplate and flawless 1/10 karat diamonds with perfect clarity to mark each hour on the faceplate. This would require over 1 karat of flawless diamond which would of course be well over $10,000.00. The watch may end up costing about $150,000.00; time for crafting and testing the watch must also be factored into the price in addition to materials. The most expensive Rolex in history was the unique Paul Newman Rolex, costing approximately $350,000.00.

Similar to the price of the most expensive Rolex is the price of the most expensive clock in the world.

“La Machine a Ecrire le Temps” crafted by Jaquet Droz is valued at $342,275.00. With more than 1,200 components, this clock is an innovative and unique futuristic-looking machine, able to write the current time on paper (!). Of course the machine is far more than just an average clock, but its composition is so phenomenal it is definitely worth mentioning.

Take a look at how “La Machine a Ecrire le Temps” can write down the current time on a piece of paper in this short video (interesting certainly, but one must ask the question, “Why?”):

Some of the most expensive clocks are antique clocks.

Due to their rarity and the famous skilled craftsmen in history who designed them, many antique clocks are among the most valuable on the market today. Antique grandfather clocks from the Black Forest, Swiss and French clock craftsmen are highly sought novelties by antique clock connoisseurs, selling for prices between $10,000.00 and $75,000.00. Another very valuable antique clock is the cuckoo clock. Depending on the condition of the materials and features, some of these clocks generally average between $300.00 and $10,000.00; some very rare clocks are valued higher. Because cuckoo clocks originated in the Black Forest area of Germany, pieces from this region are some of the most coveted subjects among antique cuckoo clocks.

Dent is a company in London famous for luxury clocks and watches. This company boasts the accomplishment of crafting London’s magnificent four-faced clock on the structure often called “Big Ben“. Big Ben is actually the name of the bell that chimes, but the name of the clock featured on the tower is “The Westminster Clock”. From mantle clocks to architectural clocks, Dent produces some of the most valuable timepieces in the world. Each piece is meticulously planned and perfected.

Mantle clocks with elaborate designs and substances of pure precious metals are popular and sought by many customers. Vintage or used simple Dent clocks may be found for around $1,000.00. New Dent clocks range between $10,000.00 and $25,000.00 for pieces from signature collections. Watches are also made of these precious metals and diamonds; prices range between $300.00 and well into the upper thousands for these luxury time-telling ornaments. Dent’s architectural clocks such as The Westminster Clock are made by contract. Many of their masterpieces are found on structures throughout Europe and the Middle East.

Flavor Flav from Public Enemy showing off an expensive clock?

In contemporary times, one of the most expensive timepiece categories is grandfather clocks. Some of the most costly and revered luxury clocks sought today are Hentschel grandfather-style clocks. Upscale of $10,000.00, since 1890 these clocks have been carefully hand-crafted of the highest quality wood, brass and durable glass. Hentschel offers several different varieties of grandfather clocks with simple to exquisite details.

While antique cuckoo clocks are still popular today, new cuckoo clocks are even more popular. Most clock collectors seek the chalet-styled cuckoo clocks. The three types of the chalet cuckoo clock are Swiss, Bavarian and Black Forest. Hand crafted, each piece is unique and varies in price depending upon which craftsman designed it. Switzerland is the country where the expensive novelties are produced. Prices for these melodious treasures begin around $1,500.00. Unique or specially crafted clocks may cost several thousand more.

One thing is sure; a clock’s value is measured upon the appreciation for the creator, the time spent crafting and the cost of the goods used in its manufacture.

As with any other tangible item, luxury timepieces are worth exactly the price the consumer values them at and is willing to pay for them.

In a mystifying act of potential career suicide, Online Clock, the online alarm clock, offers ideas for (gasp!) waking up WITHOUT an alarm clock.

Ralph darted through the hedges to his neighbor’s house just minutes before 7:00 a.m. After picking up Jim’s newspaper and opening the door, 8-year-old Ralph strolled through the house and up the stairs to Jim’s room. Jim was lying face-down on his bed, still snoring deeply when Ralph smacked him squarely in the nose with the paper. “Hey! Mr. Jones! Wake up!” Ralph smacked him again several times until Jim sleepily rubbed his eyes, sat up, blinked a few times and then reached for his wallet. He pulled out a crisp dollar and gave it to the boy. A second later, Ralph was running down the stairs saying “Thanks! See you tomorrow at the same time!” “See you tomorrow,” Jim replied, as he rose from bed and began preparing for work.

What’s wrong with this story?

First of all, who would pay someone to sneak into their own house to wake them up by getting smacked with a newspaper? Surely there is a better way, one would think. But perhaps Jim sleeps so soundly that paper-smacking is the only effective method. Of course the next question that comes to mind is “Why doesn’t Jim get an alarm clock?” That brings us to the point of this discussion: what would we do without alarm clocks? Suppose a person doesn’t like alarm clocks or has something against them; or suppose that there were no such things as alarm clocks, but we had silent wall clocks precise enough that our life’s responsibilities demanded we wake up and be on time for work or our appointments. Some people sleep more deeply than others, so there definitely would be a variety of wake-up methods. What would they be like?

Those who love their dogs may find that man’s best friend would also be man’s best helper. By taking a walk early in the morning with the dog every day for a couple of months, the owner would find the dog starting to expect that. Suppose after two months of morning walks the owner threw out his alarm clock. Now instead of waking up to beeping, he is awakened by a barking, whining or overly-enthusiastic furry friend plastering him with slobbery dog kisses.

Some people may be allergic to dogs, so that wouldn’t work for them. For parents with small children an easy answer would be provided. Small children often wander into their parents’ room during the early morning hours demanding attention, a toy, breakfast or a drink of water. Children are usually fairly consistent with their waking times, so a parent could feasibly sit the child down and explain how important it is to wake the parents early in the morning.

College students living in a dorm could simply start sleeping on the couches in the lobby. Usually as morning hours approach, enough traffic passes through the lobby that the student would have an easy time waking up from the noise. Of course it is important to go check in the mirror before going to class; nothing could be worse than showing up to class only to have the entire lecture hall turn and laugh because the couch dweller’s fellow dorm students have decided to practice their artistic facial “makeup” skills with magic markers.

People who live alone may not have small children or an eager pet to wake them; however many people who live alone enjoy drinking coffee, so buying a timed coffee maker is another option. By setting the coffee maker to brew about 1/2 hour before the desired time to rise a person could enjoy waking up to the smell of coffee, freshly brewed and ready to drink. Another self-timed option lies in televisions; people may choose to set the timer on a t.v to wake them up with a favorite show coming on at that hour.

Sometimes noise is the best thing to cause a person to wake up. Those who live in busy cities such as New York City, where the garbage truck comes every morning, could simply leave their window open and allow the city noises of the early morning to wake them. Unless visits from curious, food-seeking pigeons are desired in order to wake up the sleeper, it would also be important to have a screen over the open window. People who live in cities where noise is considered pollution, such as Los Angeles, could hire the nearest aspiring musician in the neighborhood to wake them up with guitar solos, drums or singing.

Another factor that will cause people to wake up is bright sunlight. For those who need darkness to sleep, this would be the most effective solution. Simply removing curtains or buying sheer curtains for a window facing east would ensure that the person is awakened by the sun each morning.

One very reliable avian alarm is the rooster; batteries not required! These obnoxious-sounding birds would actually be a gem in a world with no alarm clocks. In the olden days these creatures often woke farmers at the start of the day. Now most cities will allow them as pets, so a person could actually buy one and utilize it to wake them up before dawn. We wish you lots of luck with your new house pet. Don’t forget to get a hen or two to go with it…think about all those fresh eggs!

Everyone has a natural clock, referred to as their circadian rhythms. These signals are supposed to be in close relation with our sleep schedules. Some people may be able to successfully develop a proper circadian rhythm cycle, allowing them to forgo an alarm clock.

Let’s face it though, most of us have hectic and irregular schedules; we may go to bed at 10:00 one night and stay out until 3:00 in the morning the next. By doing this we unbalance our natural circadian rhythms. Whether the solution is going to bed earlier, sleeping next to someone who snores too loud or sleeping with an oxygen mask on, everyone can think of ways to wake up without an alarm clock, should the need or desire to do this ever arise.

Hey, did we just write all of that? What do we want to do here, commit career suicide or something? After all, we run an online alarm clock, by golly, and we have an empire to support!

Of course these days, no one with a computer and an internet connection has to experiment with any of these methods of waking up without an alarm clock. Just point your web browser to OnlineClock.net, keep it open, and make sure that your computer, if you’re using a laptop doesn’t go into “sleep” or “hibernation” mode; also try to make sure that, if you’re using Windows, there will be no automatic reboot if Windows updates are set to install automatically (which we do recommend, to keep your computer safe!).

We hope you’ve learned a thing or two about waking up…both with and without alarm clocks. Now don’t get any funny ideas and start trying to go alarm clock-less on us.

We know where you live.

The strange, melting clocks painted by Salvador Dali are classic images of surrealist art. OnlineClock.net explores the history & meaning of Dali's clock art.

Perhaps the most famous clock artwork is that of Salvador Dali.

Almost everyone has seen his eye-catching surreal creations somewhere; clocks which appear distorted or melted, often portrayed in strange predicaments.

Dali was born in a Spanish city named Figueres in 1904. Influenced by the artist Ramon Pichot, Dali’s original work consisted mostly of charcoal drawings. After adopting a style he believed to be Cubism, Dali gained a lot of attention. Shortly after this, the handsome young Dali was expelled from the academy he attended because he felt his professors were not good enough to evaluate his work (and who knows, maybe he was right)!

Perhaps this was true; everything about Dali was artistic, including his wild handlebar mustache which he often created different designs from.

There is even a famous photo of Dali with flowers on each end of the mustache as it points skyward. Dali’s permanent influences upon his style varied from Picasso to Raphael, making his art work reflect a combination of many styles, all the while retaining the surreal image he is widely known for. His depictions of clocks have inspired clock companies to create droopy real-life replicas, which are widely sold and still fairly popular.

Dali’s most famous trend began in 1931: The Timepiece Paintings.

During this year Dali presented his first famous masterpiece titled “Persistence of Memory“. This particular piece depicted stop-watch faces which appear to have a very flimsy look; the watches look very thin with one drooped over a dead tree, another sliding off of a block and another lying on the ground. The background appears to reflect a desert-meets-sea setting. The mixture of so many mysterious objects all included in one photo along with the fact that the stop-watches were melting, seemed to create an epidemic of intrigue about Dali’s unique style.

Salvador Dali's "Soft Watch at Moment of First Explosion"

In 1954 Dali created another very interesting and famous stop-watch work titled “ Soft Watch at Moment of First Explosion” depicting a soft stopwatch self-destructing. Flying debris is seen near the clock’s face, giving it the appearance that it’s beginning to disintegrate. Similar to “Persistence of Memory” is the background: a desert-meets-sea look is noted behind the subject. On this particular piece the stop-watch dominates most of the space, also appearing to be a flexible object sliding off of a precise blocked edge.

Around the time of the 1970s, Dali began a series of timepiece creations, all reflecting clock faces. Once again, the clock faces appear soft and flexible. “Stillness of Time“, created in 1979, depicts a gold-rimmed clock with a rather fluid appearance. The clock seems to be wearing a crown; interestingly it looks as though the clock also has tree roots and a couple of bare branches. Another piece titled “Tearful Soft Watch Giclee” depicts a delicate soft stop watch droopingly draped on a leafless tree.

Dali's "Stillness of Time"

One of Dali’s works titled “Clock B Giclee” is quite different from his usual timepiece depictions. This clock does not resemble a normal clock face with hands and numbers, as seen in his Soft Watch works. Instead, the same barren tree figure from various other works is portrayed dangling a very ornate clock with many different colors. Observers would need to look closely to identify the object as a clock. In addition to creating many drawings and paintings of surreal timepieces, Dali has also created several sculptures depicting the soft-looking clocks. “Horse Saddled with Time” is a sculpture of a horse with a clock face draped over its back instead of a saddle. Valued at over $10,000.00, this piece is thought to be one of his finer sculptures. “Danse Du Temp” is another sculpture by Dali. This clock sculpture is black and gold, seemingly stretched or distorted.

So by now most readers are probably wondering what the significance of the clocks found in Dali’s timepiece works is, right?

Clocks are portrayed to appear soft and thin to make the point that time is not relevant in Dali’s perspective. The first clock painting created by Dali was to reflect the state of human dreams; clocks were depicted as “slipping” because he felt that things in dreams are hard to see clearly and they are so easily forgotten. In some of his works, clocks are seen with ants or appear to be disintegrating, implying death. Through these depictions he is expressing the idea that time dies and slips away.

"Horse Saddled With Time" Sculpture By Salvador Dali

In the case of the “Horse Saddled With Time” sculpture, time is depicted as a burden being taken away by a quickly moving beast of burden, making the impression that time is a quickly passing burden. The lone barren tree seen often in Dali’s paintings is said to reflect either how time kills living things or how time may seem empty. However his art is perceived by the viewer is left to their individual appreciation and perspective. His work definitely has a lot of intriguing qualities; even after his death his pieces are still sold, in fact there is an online gallery featuring his work exclusively for sale.

Yes, Salvador Dali definitely left his impression on this world while he passed through it!

Two Dali museums exist dedicated to his life’s surreal creations. One museum is located in St. Petersburg, Florida and the other is located in his hometown of Figueres, Spain. This location also features some of the rare photography and films he created.

An autobiography of Dali was also penned, which is definitely worth reading. The world through Dali’s perspective is an interesting one, so readers are sure to enjoy this book. Those interested in copies of Dali’s work may easily be able to find prints in numerous places for affordable prices; original pieces may consume an entire nest egg though, as they generally tend to begin at about $20,000.00 and run upward of $300,000.000.

So, from all of us at OnlineClock.net, we salute you, Salvador Dali, for being one of the greatest creators of highly original clocks!

Ever seen a Strawberry Clock video? If not, you're missing out: The Clock Crew is a fun-loving anarchic group of animators who make hilarious video art.

In reality, time relates to every existing thing on this planet. Alternately, imagine an artistic world where everything is related to time.

One group of artistic pioneers have made that idea excel in animation. Their purpose is to create a supportive community for amateur animators and artists focusing on clock themes; to provide a completely unique entertainment experience for viewers and followers. They have formed a network where every clock artist is free to express themselves in any fashion, however most choose flash animation. Some may choose still image artwork or music media instead, but the main focus of the group is flash animation. Who are they? The Clock Crew. Founded in 2001 after the initial mass appearances of the famous “Strawberry Clock” character, the Clock Crew was formed.

When The Clock Crew initially began producing animations, they had flooded the Newgrounds.com portal so much that people who didn’t like them requested The Clock Crew be banned. The crew had gained popularity through intrigue of its unique content and mass productions. Soon many others began joining the group. Eventually a support website for The Clock Crew was started which is still active and boasts well over 4,500 members. The Clock Crew community is very large, but groups and smaller sub-groups have formed for each specific area of clock entertainment. The main groups feature different media aspects for artists. Sub-groups are formed for more precise concentration areas of these groups. For example, there is an Audio Collaborations group with three sub-groups named “Music Remixes”, “Musician Tribe” and “The Music Group”.

Strawberry Clock: King of NewGrounds.com and undisputed Star of most animations by The Clock Crew.

Known as “King of the Portal”, Strawberry Clock is perhaps the most famous icon among the Clock Crew. It is commonly believed that this crew was started by Strawberry Clock, but The Clockopedia (we’ll explain what this is in a second) says the original crew actually consisted of three other clocks: Apple Clock, Raspberry Clock and Orange Clock. Orange Clock was the founding member of The Clock Crew. Strawberry Clock definitely had the most and worst quality animation submissions in the beginning, making it the most popular clock. Orange Clock was famous for good quality animations and setting trends in styles of presentations. Eventually other fruit clock characters surfaced, such as Grapes Clock and Pineapple Clock. Eventually clocks started to evolve in other representations from food to drugs. As a result, two clock classifications were adopted: fruit clocks and weird clocks. Any clock character that is not a fruit clock is considered to be a weird clock. The fruit clocks still remain the most famous characters.

By now, every reader is probably wondering what these animations are about. Most animations submitted by The Clock Crew focus on some form of an extraordinary adventure or a farce of a popular movie or event. When something happens that normally would be bad or dangerous, these animations weave abstract fun and humor into the plot to create an entertainment quality that intrigues and fascinates the viewer. Although the animations are far from professional, the quality of entertainment is definitely good, fun and unique in each one and creates a respectful integrity for each presentation. After viewers watch several of these abstract animations, understanding how the spread of popularity happened so quickly is easy. Quirky situations with unpredictable events coupled with the impossible notion of a clock manifesting itself as a piece of food or fruit (and being heroic) make these animations comparable to none. Choppy sounding narration is common in these presentations, adding to the simplicity they project. The majority of animations are published on the Newgrounds website, but there are several that have been posted on YouTube also, including many of the famous Strawberry Clock adventures.

The first flash animation ever submitted to NewGrounds.com by The Clock Crew consisted of...just the letter B!

The most significant day of the year for The Clock Crew and Newgrounds alike is August 15th. Deemed as “Clock Day” in 2001 when the famous “B” production was submitted to Newgrounds, this date is considered the birthday of the crew. “B” was a submission from Strawberry Clock, aka Coolboyman. This presentation gained fame because its entire content was simply the letter “B” with a white background. After the submission was published, its popularity soared because it was so simple yet controversial. Perhaps other Newgrounds artists felt insulted that their hard work did not rival such intriguing simplicity. Each year on August 15th, Clock Crew members submit their best material and most visit the forums and chat sections of the website to honor the epic day The Clock Crew documented its existence.

Originally, there was much resistance on Newgrounds to these new clock animations coming through the portal. Groups who didn’t like The Clock Crew made anti-clock animations depicting the destruction of the clock characters and tried desperately to have the crew banned. Refusing to fight fire with fire, The Clock Crew nobly responded to these negative animations offering kindness and help to those who hated them, which increased the anger of the opposing side. Many people tend to root for the underdogs in life, so of course this meant even more popularity for The Clock Crew. Their unique and unpredictable response reflected their unique and unpredictable style. Strawberry Clock was the crew character who submitted the famed “B” presentation which made many Newgrounds users very upset.

The Clock Crew was banned from creating a Wikipedia.org page (shame on you, Wikipedia!), so the group formed their own wiki called “Clockopedia” where designated editors are allowed to post information pertaining to the group, its activities and history.

Although this wiki is helpful, obtaining a page on Wikipedia is a goal still strongly sought, so much in fact that The Clock Crew has formed an online petition for supporters to sign to reverse Wikipedia’s unfavorable decision. With a multi-feature website which includes a forum, chat and links to Clockopedia and Newgrounds, the artistic productions of The Clock Crew are easily accessible. Plenty of contests and events flourish and keep the website very active. Enjoying the freedom of expression in their clock creations, users submit new content every month knowing it will be appreciated by fellow Clock Crew members and fans for its individuality.

In the course of being online now for several years, we at Online Clock have watched and enjoyed dozens of video animations made by various members of The Clock Crew.

All we can say is that, if you’re a fan of wild, anarchic art, you owe it to yourself to go to NewGrounds or YouTube immediately and search for any video about Strawberry Clock and/or The Clock Crew. But be careful: these video animations are often wild, irrelevant, anarchic pieces of art; and they’re sometimes not politically correct and not safe for work. Just try to keep an open mind and remember that clocks just want to have fun.

Sure, the quality of the individual animations varies, but on the whole The Clock Crew has released a great deal of truly fun, interesting art to the world…and we think this is pretty darn cool. There’s enough boring stuff in this world, and it’s great that people still make things for the fun they get out of doing it.

To all of the members of The Clock Crew – we salute you!

An Online Clock changes everything: it's time for the creator of the Online Alarm Clock to wax not-so-poetic about the bad old days gone by.

It’s true.

No matter how corny it sounds. And as I sit here, writing this blog post, I’m thinking back at how I got here, to this very point in time. It’s been a long and strange journey.

My name’s Tom and I’m the creator of the original Online Alarm Clock. We were the world’s first online alarm clock to go live, back in March of 2006…don’t forget that, please. Since then literally dozens and dozens of imitators have come along and, you know what? I hate them all. But I digress…

All hail, Wisconsin!

I was born in a suburban town in Wisconsin. Later my family moved all the heck over the United States. For about four years we lived in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, which was kind of a tourist area on Lake Michigan; our house was located in the woods. At the time we lived there this town had a population of about 350. That’s right, 350. It was so boring for me as a young kid, because I had no friends living in the same town…my best buddies lived in neighboring towns that were about a 30 or 40 minute drive away from beautiful downtown Egg Harbor.

Egg Harbor was the kind of town known for Cow Tipping.

For those of you not in the know, Cow Tipping is a kind of modern myth. It refers to the practice of tipping over cows while they’re sleeping, which is supposed to be a fun past-time for hayseeds everywhere.

(The problem is that Cow Tipping is truly a myth, since every farmer knows that cows sleep while laying down.)

The other practice Egg Harbor was known for involves bar-hopping on snowmobiles in the winter. Each winter, at least one death seemed to occur when an unwitting and half-drunken snowmobiler stupidly drove through a field with a barbed-wire fence, thus decapitating him or herself on the barbed wire.

Well, **** happens.

So now, some thirty years later, with Egg Harbor far behind, it should slowly become clear to you what I mean it, when I say that Online Clock saved my life.

After Egg Harbor there was Fayetteville Arkansas, then Evanston Illinois, then college in Boulder, Colorado, then a couple of years living with Mom in downtown Chicago, then about four years on the Upper West Side of Manhattan living in a horrific Single Room Occupancy Hotel, and then, due to not having “made it” in the city that never sleeps, I moved on over to San Francisco’s Mission District, and then finally to here in Berlin, Germany, where I live now.

Berlin is which is a big, spread-out city that sometimes reminds me of Chicago. Only the language is different, and they eat Döner Kebab and Currywurst here instead of deep dish pizza, ribs and pure beef hot dogs.

The Döner Kebab in its natural habitat.

Being an American dude, I feel a bit exotic here in Berlin. The life here is easy and much cheaper compared to what it was like for me back in the big cities of the U.S.A. It’s pretty safe here, too. No problems with guns on every corner. You can walk the streets at night, if you want to.

Come on over to Berlin, I say…moving here might work out well for you, as it did for me. There are a few advantages…

If you’re an American, Europeans tend to think you must be a computer genius. All Americans, right? I mean, the country that spawned NASA and the internet and Baywatch must produce nothing other than computer geniuses. If you move here from San Francisco (which neighbors on Silicon Valley), this “computer genius effect” is even intensified. Use it, as I have used it, to your own advantage. What the heck, you only go around once.

So, back to the subject of life-saving.

The Clock that saved my life.

Before I created the Online Clock website, I was kind of lost. Much of life in the U.S.A. seems to revolve around material success…and, well, I never had any.

As a result, I felt like I was walking around all the time with a big sign taped to my back stating, “Kick me, I’m a loser!”.

And then I had the idea, while working as a web programmer back in 2006, of creating the world’s first website devoted to being…an alarm clock. It took off.

Oh sure, there are those living in the USA who have completely different values and end up doing social work or finding religion. But none of that was right for me, somehow, so I simply floundered through my life there.

Moving to Berlin was a nice change. It resulted, through a serpentine and circuitous route, in the website that you’re using now.

And for me, that’s made all the difference.

Are you a digital or analog clock person...or perhaps the kind of total freak who prefers a pocket watch? Who is winning the epic battle for your wrist?

There’s an epic battle being waged across the world. The battle line storms across the wrists and pockets of the soldiers of time keeping. It’s a final showdown between analog watches, digital watches, and pocket watches.

The “Pocket Watch” camp is full of steampunk fans and lovers of yore. Yore that is too “yore” to be retro (what the heck did that just mean?!). Pocket watches get passed down through families. From father to son to grandson, these beautiful discs of history are cherished heirlooms. With their ornate treasure tucked inside a coat pocket or hip pocket, pocket watch wearers view the “wrist people” with smug and distant interest. Pocket watch wearers know that the “Analogs” and the “Digitals” will thin out each other and make it easier for them to rule the world. All they have to do is bide their time. Time—that they can watch in the palm of their hands.

The “Analogs” prefer an analog face on their wrist watches. A fake analog face won’t do. No, a digital readout that looks like an analog watch isn’t good enough. “Analogs” only value a true analog watch. A sweeping second-hand, a ticking minute hand, and a short tocking hour hand are all critically important. Sometimes a date and day can be displayed, but for the most part analog watches are all about the time. “Analogs” prefer a simpler more refined face upon their timepieces.

It's a fight to the death between analog and digital clock lovers - who will win?

The “Digitals” prefer a digital face upon their watches. They want to know if it’s 3:38 at a glance and not guess if it’s 3:37 or 3:39. “About quarter till” isn’t good enough for this sort. They don’t want to fool around with hands. A clean and clear digital readout fits them. The date is always “at wrist” for this bunch of time lovers. Frequent travelers will look for digital watches that display more than one time. In Ireland and want to know the time in Boston? Just look at your watch, brave traveler, just look at your watch. From stopwatch functions to alarms, a digital wrist watch is one-stop glance for all your need.

The “Digitals” and the “Analogs” can often be seen in brutal, ugly battles in stores everywhere.

For some reason, most women we know seem to fall into the “Analog” camp. Could this reveal an inner aversion to all things TECH (ie: Digital)?

No one is buying this, are they? All right, fine! There are no brutal battles; however, analog and digital watches do offer the user different things. As far as fashion is concerned, an analog clock is considered a bit more formal and refined than a digital clock. Additionally, some people who enjoy all things retro have taken a renewed interest in those big, bulky calculator watches from the 1980s (personally, we love ‘em!). And no discussion about watches would be complete without mentioning the freaks…I mean…very bright people who get those funky watches with no numbers or just crazy designs on them, which makes them nearly impossible to read.

There’s a variety of clocks and watches for all personality types and they all reflect a myriad of personal tastes even if there aren’t any cool battles (well, at least we think of them as battles!).

No matter where you are or what watch you prefer, OnlineClock.net is there for you 24/7 when you need to set the time, or need to set an alarm.

Still, pocket watch wearers, we’re on to you.

You people are FREAKS!

A poem on the Alarm Clock Blog? What, has the sound of our own alarm finally driven us mad? Well, maybe...and maybe not. Read more to find out.

Okay, and now for something completely different.

Imagine that it’s 1981 and you’re a college kid in his first year at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

You have no idea what you want to do with your life but you know you like to read crazy books so you decide to become an English major and worry about what you’ll do for a job at a later date (a much later date, as it turned out).

At Boulder, Colorado you discover beatnik literature, including such authors as William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac and Charles Bukowski (ok, not a Beat, but great) and you also happen to discover American punk rock at the same time. You don’t know which has the bigger influence on you: punk rock or underground literature.

William S. Burroughs, earlier a(n anti) hero of mine.

So you’re heavily into William S. Burroughs’ cut up experimental literature while at the same time listening to The Flesheaters or The Gun Club or Flipper on vinyl LPs (remember those?!) and you become some weird kind of intelligent punk rock beatnik bookworm. With straight A’s. And a Phi Beta Kappa. (yawn)

You begin financing your extracurricular activities by writing the school papers and essays that your friends and acquaintances have due in their classes…and you start creating your own chapbooks of poetry which are then given to perhaps two people at most.

Poetry is lame. But mine wasn’t. It was punk.

Chris D.'s lyrics to The Flesheaters' songs were much better than 90% of the literature I studied in college.

Years later I ended up abandoning a promising career as an advertising copywriter because it sucked. Not only did advertising copy writing suck, it was stressful and cutthroat to boot. So I did odd jobs for many years until I eventually ended up becoming a Web Developer. Coding is like writing. It all kind of makes sense, at least to me.

But in all those long years of one bad job after another (several of them involved making Cafe Lattes for Yuppies at the various cafes where I worked), I also tried to work on writing…

Here, now, is a lost poem from those college years…or was it from the odd job years? Who knows. The brain cells which might reveal this to me are now gone forever. I just happened to think of this poem yesterday, as it struck me what a long, hard road it’s been from those times back then to being the creator of the world’s original Online Alarm Clock website now (which is really great).

The title of this little piece was/is “Morning Sickness“:

Morning Sickness

This globe is a mattress
on which we walk in sleep
a round rotating death lap,
on which we f*** and eat
but never awaken.

We are hibernating
until spasms nocturne
or a blood-stirring pain
alarm us into day
like war, noise or disease:
they pull the covers back.

If we were injected
with Sunlight Benzedrine
shadows would crawl inside,
Queen-Sized Earth would yawn farts,
the shock would kill our dreams,
most likely we'd get sick.

Yet awake we should be,
enlightened by squalor:
the goddess in curlers
bleeds on sheets this morning,
baptized by the rooster's shouts
when the fetus rouses.

At this point you might be asking yourself, “What the heck’s that doing on this Alarm Clock Blog – has this dude flipped his wig?”.

Well, if you think about it, it’s kind of ironic, isn’t it?

I mean, that I wrote such a poem about wakefulness so many years ago, only to end up working on this cool alarm clock website now?

Well, I think it’s a very cool coincidence and I hope some of you also enjoyed reading “Morning Sickness“.

But, if not: no problem.
