Alien Clock

There’s no shortage of strange alarm clocks in this world, and OnlineClock.net loves to discover them and report on them here in the Alarm Clock Blog.

So it’s with great pleasure that we recently found the Alien Clock.

The Alien Clock is reminiscent of our Binary Clock, in that it uses a representation of the current time that is completely different than what we’re all used to. Unlike our Binary Clock, which shows a mathematical display of the current time that has become an accepted format for clock freaks, the Alien Clock’s display of the time is truly, err, unique.

This artfully sculpted and sophisticated timepiece will bring hours of intrigue and enjoyment as you enter into a new dimension of keeping time.

Indeed, the Alien Clock is a new dimension in clocks…one that almost requires you to go get your pocket calculator in order to read the time. Their webpage lists instructions on how to read the Alien Clock. The various different colored lights on the Alien Clock have different numerical values, which need to be added together to get the total values for the hours, minutes and seconds:

Green has a numerical value of 1
Red has a numerical value of 5
Yellow has a numerical value of 10

The Alien Clock website also states that “Seconds are on a binary sequence”, though we’re not entirely sure what this phrase is supposed to mean here – are the seconds shown as on a binary clock?.

Confused? We are, too. Clearly, being able to easily read the time with this device is not the point here. The Alien Clock is mainly supposed to be cool, which it definitely is. Hopefully, once you own one of these and have had time to practice, reading the time will become easier for you. If nothing else, you do have an attractive, high-tech display of blinking lights which you can always use to confuse your cat.

Note: Apparently the Alien Clock is a representation of a clock originally shown on the “Star Trek – Deep Space Nine” TV Series. If there are any Trekkies reading this, perhaps you can confirm this for us.

What the Alien Clock lacks is an alarm function, so you’ll still need an alarm clock. We know a good one that we can recommend…
