I think you miss the point, it would be a loop (so both ends would be connected together), so when you got to the end, you would be at the beginning again.
These mechanisms were common during the seventies.
having said that, every minute there is a slight mechanical &quot;shuffling&quot; sound when there is a digit change. like any noise, it can get annoying. 
Before the advent of true silent clocks (in the eighties), if you wanted a clock in the room, you put up with the noise. (most clocks made a constant ticking, and had to be wound every week.
